ThinkPad's from IBM/Lenova are my favorite non-Apple laptops (ibook or powerbook). Everything else seems like junk, in my limited experience.

TechNotes

  • 14" ThinkPad T42 from CDW for $1500 in December 2004.
    • Decided on the 14" 1024x768 with low dot-pitch so my Dad can read the screen easier.
  • 13.3" ThinkPad 600 model 2645-4AU:
    • basic specs: PII-366 (similar models 2645-45U has 300 MHz CPU, and the 600x 2645-8AU has 500 MHz)
    • To enter test mode, hold down ESC as you power on. Config mode is F1.
    • The hard drive bay looks like it has room for 12.5 MM high HDD max.

Some time around 2002, I rescued from the scrap heap at work an old ThinkPad760EL (9547-U4H) which is a P-133 with a 12-inch 800x600 screen and max RAM of [mumble]-MB.
